Cruises do make up their money with expensive excursions. Often you can get a taxi into town and then wander around yourself though with places like Malaga, there is quite a lot of it so you should know where you are going, whereas with Gibraltar, it's quite compact and not a lot to do other than a cable car up the rock and walk down. They use English money there.
Barcelona has a good metro system for getting around as well as buses, but remember it is the pick pocket capital of Europe.
Print off some B&W maps of these places and mark off on them what you want to see.
Try a Caribbean cruise some time. They are excellent and there are always bargains available on the travel channel, online, in newspapers, etc.

Palma : The information you have provided is the one I was looking for as I was wondering how do we manage the transfer between airport and port. So thank you so much for this.
I couldn't agree any more with you that cruises make their money with expensive excursions. That was the reason why we decided that we will do the excursions on our own.
Barcelona : Thanks for warning us beforehand to take care of our valuable stuff.
I will google to get the maps of these places that would help us to get some idea.
