I have flown with both of these domestically and within Asia. These typically are short flights and have been fine. The planes and facilities are usually clean. The food is OK, usually two Chinese options. Although when flying from Thailand, had a Thai option too.
For long haul, check entertainment - ie whether you have English language movies / soundtracks, personal unit, etc. Or take your own - an iPad / iPhone / Kindle might be all you need.
Check also if you have have to stopover in Shanghai or Beijing en route, whether you need a Chinese visa.
Be aware that this is not the most direct flight - the flight from Heathrow to Shanghai is 11 hours, and then a further 10 hours to Sydney. I find that HK or Singapore transit is actually shorter flying time.

I spoke to a friend who used Malaysia Airlines, and she said they were reasonable and comfortable.
Ive got my iPad and iPhone ready to be stocked up with music and movies :D

Glad to be of use... just FYI, my parents just booked flights to Shanghai from Melbourne with China Eastern for Christmas!! They are a bit fussy, and granted, they are flying business class, but told me the airline is launching a new fleet next week with full in seat entertainment... not sure if that is just in business, but anyway....
I flew last year from HKG-PVG-LHR with China Eastern airlines (because we were stranded and needed to get home) and they were the cheapest by a long way. However from my experience with them, I have to admit I would probably not fly with them again. Our seats had no inflight entertainment (even on the 13 hour sector of the flight!) and only had 1 small tv screen that dropped down that we couldnt see (but was only in chinese even if we could have seen it!). I'm going to Australia myself at the end of this year and was once again faced with saving some money to book with China Eastern and I happily spent extra to not have to travel with them again!
