Yunnan is located in low latitude plateau with complex topography. Because of its special location, the weather of Yunnan province is mainly affect by high-pressure flow of South Bengal that formed Plateau monsoon climate. Therefore, the weather of most areas of Yunnan province is fairly mild in winter and rather cool in summer. Due to different area, the weather is diverse. The north areas are colder than the south areas, such in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, winters reach chilling lows of -12 °C and summer temperatures peak at highs of 19 °C; While in Xishuangbanna, winter reach 11 °C and summer temperatures peak at highs of 33 °C. Though the temperature of Yunnan is diverse in different areas, the beast time to go to Yunnan is from March to October. However, there are still some differences among those popular destinations.
Best time to go to Lijiang
Overall, the temperature of Lijiang is lower than the other places in Yunnan. There is also a big temperature difference between day and night. Therefore, the best time to travel Lijiang is spring and summer. If you want to experience the most beautiful scenery of Lijiang, April and May should be the best time for you to arrive there. Warm notes for your Lijiang travel: besides take along some warm clothes, you’d better bring with an umbrella if you arrive at summer.
Best time to go to Shangri-La
Shangri-La located in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture where the temperature is lowest in winter around Yunnan province. And it’s also not very hot in summer. However, the most beautiful sceneries in Shangri-La are showed from spring to summer. So the best time for you to travel Shangri-La is spring and summer.
Hope you have joyful journey, all the best.
Yunnan is a beautiful spot... I would suggest that April to October is the ideal times to travel there. I went there in summer (July) and had lovely clear blue skies and warm days without humidity, but the nights were still cool.
In winter, the high altitude regions of Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La it will be cold and snowy. I believe Shangri-La almost closes down in the very depths of winter. The southern parts near Xishuangbanna are more tropical and humid.
I don't know the YuanYang rice field, but we visited Baishuitai terraces from Shangri-La and they were stunning. there were bus tours and private car tours from Shangri-La. If you look for my blog, I wrote about our trip Yunnan in July 2010, and covered how we got around too.
It's a wonderful spot, and I'd love to go back!!
July is the most funy time in Yunnan, when there are mountains of blooming azaleas in Lijiang, Shangri-La, Tiger Leaping Gorge’ scenery is very also very good. What’s more, the landscape of Xishuangbanna is good too.
While winter is a good time to see the snow-capped mountains, such as the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Shika Snow Mountain Meili Snow Mountain, especially Meili Snow Mountain, which is really spectacular.
Hi,
Anytime. The climate in Yunnan is like northern California, not too hot or too cold any time in a year. Please avoid the first week of May, Oct., and during the Chinese New Year. It would be super crowded during those weeks.
