Backpacking with a Mac

I'm thinking of taking my Macbook Pro travelling with me when I leave in a couple of months. But I'm really not sure. I'm planning on going for just under 2 years on my own, starting in Central America then on to South America, New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, S.E Asia, India, China, S. Korea and finally Japan. I'm going to do it on a shoestring so I will be staying in dorms. I've read quite a few forums and had very mixed responses regarding this subject - as you'd imagine! But as I'll be doing a RTW trip on my own and staying in cheap dorms I feel that I need my own thread.

Even the 13" is a heavy piece of hardware to haul around, but it's up to personal preference. Unless you were doing major stuff with photos/video then I don't see the need for a laptop when you have the iPhone, but it's up to you.

Something like this is handy in dorms, especially in hostels with crappy lockers: http://pacsafe.com/travelsafe-12l-portable-safe (Not to be confused with the giant mesh Pacsafes that cover your entire backpack - in my opinion they're useless - but that's another discussion...)

Cheers,
Terry
