Volunteer Work (paid)

Hi Guys,
Hope your all having a awesome 2013 :D

I'm not sure there is such a thing as paid volunteering? But there are of course teaching jobs where you get a small local salary for teaching. Usually you either need to be a native speaker or have completed a TEFL, and both probably doesn't hurt. In my experience these tend to be in Asia. There's a big market for it in china for example. Where are you traveling?

I agree with Sam - the words 'paid' and 'volunteering' are contradictory in meaning. Yes, many of the volunteer organizations due charge their volunteers a fee to cover room and board. But, they do not pay a volunteer because the 'volunteer' becomes 'a paid employee'. Depending on their country, most have certain regulations to follow and hiring a 'volunteer' creates tax problems and/or violates their regulations.

Asia, especially China, is always looking for someone to teach English as a second language (TELF). South American countries are also a good choice though opening may be a bit slimmer than Asia.

I'll ask a friend who has been teaching in Shanghai for awhile (she is Canadian) about other opportunities that may suit your request.

Yeah I was a bit confused when I was told that you could get paid for volunteer work.

Unfortunately I don't have any English teaching qualifications. The reason I was asking is I know a friend that went to Vietnam for a few months teaching English to the local school. He didn't have any qualifications as such just his knowledge of our language was enough to teach the children.

The reason I asked about paid was that he was being paid a small amount whilst he was there. I'm obviously not expecting to find something where I get paid a normal wage haha.

I'd love to go to China if I was going to be teaching English.
