Well international airports tend to land only in major airports, so even if it's costly, you may not have too much of an option since the route usually dictates where you'll be landing. Smaller airports often simply don't have the facilities to handle larger planes (which would be the norm for transatlantic flights) nor the facilities to handle immigration checks for large number of international arrivals.
I didn't think Paris is too costly to land, and many major flights do land there. Athens on the other hand, yes, but consider its geographical location etc, it's understandable. Other major European airports that flights tend to land in would be London, Frankfurt and Amsterdam. But if you're not planning to travel there or near those cities, landing there and adding on travelling costs to the cities of your interest, plus the additional travelling time, is the savings worth it?
late Aug/early Sep is high season, you'll be hard pressed finding any flights to Paris for less than 800 USD from the USA. Coming from the west coast (San Fran, LA) you can expect to pay something like 1200-1500 USD return.
Note that you are flying intercontinental, thus leaving from an intercontinental airport in the USA will cut down airfare. Intercontinental airports are for example New York JFK, Chicago, Miami, Las Vegas, LAX, Denver, etc.
Since you are looking at Belgium too you could try flying into Brussels or Amsterdam.
