Entering Australia from South America

Hello
Just wanted to clarify a few things with some of you more experienced at entering Australia than me.
I'm going to be flying into Sydney from Santiago in Chile sometime at the end of this year (Nov/Dec) I will be entering on a working holiday visa so i know that they will be checking to see that i have sufficient funds for my stay, also they will require me to have a flight out of Oz? Right?
What I wanted to clear up was - do they base the amount of money you require on the date of your flight out of Oz, eg. if I enter with a flight booked to leave Oz in 3 months time surely I will require less money than if the flight out was in 12 months? How much is considered sufficient i read on the official site AUS$5000, if i roll up with £1500 sayingf i'll be there for 6 months will they turn me away???
Also can the flight be anywhere as long as it's out of Oz? Which is generally the cheapest ticket to book just to have a ticket? NZ or Thailand??
Also if i turn up with a flight out of oz for 3 months time then decide i want to stay for the full 12 months whats the craic? Do I get in touch with immigration and let them know or will i be ok as i have a years working visa?

In theory, yes. In reality, no. Over the lasy many years I've been on this site, I haven't ever heard of anyone being asked to show proof of funds (myself included, and I entered without a ticket out of the country). Of course this is no guarantee, and maybe the immigration official at the airport will be having a bad day, or maybe something about your looks and/or behaviour will make them check, but in general, backpackers on a WHV are considered "low risk" and just waved through. The AUD $5000 figure is there mostly for your own protection, as experience shows that the vast majority of backpackers really will need at least that much (and no, it doesn't really scale over the entire time you'll be spending in Australia, since the assumption is that you need it mostly for the initial "setting up and getting your bearings" period, and that after that you'll be more-or-less self-sufficient, spending as much as you'll earn). £1500 works out to almost AUD $2500, from which most backpackers can live there for about 5-6 weeks, depending on how frugal they are. This is a rather short amount of time to get set up and find work. More money would be highly advisable.

Also can the flight be anywhere as long as it's out of Oz? Which is generally the cheapest ticket to book just to have a ticket? NZ or Thailand??

The flight out of Australia isn't required; "a return or onward ticket or the funds for a fare to depart Australia" (with these funds again not being checked up on). But so yeah, any flight out of Australia means that you won't be their problem anymore, and would do. (However, if they would actually check, then they might also point out that the requirement for entering New Zealand as a visitor is to have a flight out of New Zealand again, so that might cascade through.)

How much is considered sufficient i read on the official site AUS$5000, if i roll up with £1500 sayingf i'll be there for 6 months will they turn me away???

Theoretically they might. In practice, it'd be unheard of.

Also if i turn up with a flight out of oz for 3 months time then decide i want to stay for the full 12 months whats the craic? Do I get in touch with immigration and let them know or will i be ok as i have a years working visa?

No need to get in touch with anyone. You have the visa, you can stay in the country for a year.

Thank you very much.
You have put my mind at ease
