Hi Im going to austrailia and new zealand in april, may and june. I will be staying in hostels pretty much the whole time and was wondering if they always provide clean sheets and enough bedding or should I take a sleeping bag? I know its going to be autumn in new zealand when i go so I thought I may need the extra warmth of a sleeping bag sometimes. What are your thoughts?
Yep definitely for NZ, depends on where you go in Aus. But NZ gets damn cold at that time and they are a hardy and cheap bunch that don't spend much on heat.
I wouldn't bother as many hostels won't allow you to use your own sleeping bag because of the risk of spreading bed bugs. I have travelled round the South Island of NZ in the middle of winter and found the hostels to be nice and warm; often they do have heating and plenty of blankets and bedding are provided anyway. The same goes for Australia.
What bex said. Except if you plan on going camping a lot, a sleeping bag is a waste of space. No YHA hostels will allow you to use them, and I think the same goes for pretty much all other hostel chains.
ok thanks. I think I will mainly be staying the the chain of hostels called 'Base'. Does the same rule apply for mumy bag liners as well then?

Lucie, it seems that Sander and Bex had different experiences from me. From the 7 or 8 hostels I stayed in NZ and the 5 or 6 in Auz non of them had banned sleeping bags. I know it does go on, but not the ones I was at. And like I said I had a different experience than Bex with the heat, they were damn freezing. I know a sleeping bag is a pain to haul around and I guess you can always check and see if a hostel is feeling warm and if not find another, time of year you are going its not like they will be packed. Yes at least take a sleep sheet. If you can afford it the silk ones pack down really small. Base is a big chain and may well have a ban on sleeping bags. You can always send them an email to ask.
