In Bangkok head stay in Khao San Road and you'll find loads of cheap hotels. I usually stay on the street behind (Soi Rambuttri) which is cheaper again, and also a bit more chilled out, but still only two minutes away from all the action. The last time I was in Bangkok I think I paid 180 baht for a basic fan room.
Which islands are you going to? In Koh Phi Phi the cheapest place to stay is The Rock Backpackers which is 250 Baht per night for a dorm bed. Or if you want your own room, then opposite The Rock there are quite a few guest houses charging 500-600 Baht per night for a fan room.
