If you spend a few days in Bangkok right after you arrive you can also book flights to other countries during that time. If your boyfriend is into nightlife you could benefit from a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road area. A hotel near the Nana Skytrain station will put you within walking distance to malls, street vendors, travel agencies for tours and plane tickets, nightlife, restaurants and small shops. The Skytrain can connect you with many areas of Bangkok as well as the subway and Ekamai bus station.
During your time in Bangkok you can tour the city if you want. Local travel agencies offer tours to other areas of Thailand that are not too far from Bangkok. These tour companies pick you up at your hotel and return you there at the end of the trip. There are lots of travel agencies with menu selections of popular tours. You could fly to Phnom Penh, take a boat up to Siem Reap if you want. Or book a flight to Laos.
Spend the last night in Bangkok so you don't have to worry about a connecting flight arriving late. During this last night in Bangkok you could take in an evening dinner cruise and do some last minute shopping too!
If you need any hotel recommendations always mention how much per night you want to pay for a room. This will narrow down the hotels suggested. Use a baht figure, not cheap, middle priced, or etc.
Have a nice time in Thailand. Oh yeah, you will get your best rate of exchange if you wait until you get to Thailand, the bank money changers are open 24 hours a day at the airport. Also, remember to notify your banks that you will be overseas if you intend to use a debit or credit card in Thailand. Otherwise your ATM withdrawals may be denied because of suspected fraud.
Good luck.
