Lonely planet books?

Hi, am of on a RTW trip in june for 9months travelling OZ, NZ, Malaysia, fiji, hawaii. Iv heard alot of good things about the lonely planet guides but to buy a guide for all these places is quite expensive, are they worth buying??

hi. i was thinking of buying the books at first, until i visited my local library recently. they had loads of the latest lonely planet/rough guides/insight guide books for many countries. i can borrow up to 10books for 3weeks at a time, and its free. it would be very expensive to buy all the books, and they are too heavy to take with you. i have just been filling in a small notepad with all the relevant info/contact details/prices etc for each place im going. i will just take that with me.

cheers for the info i didnt even think of going to the library.il go check it out

These days printed guidebooks are so inadequate/outdated the day they are printed - my answer is no, save your money for more important gear. Get busy and print out your own guide from info right here on TP as well as on and other online travel sites. I bought the '09 LP for Vietnam for my trip last year and what a waste!

Go to a second hand book shop and buy one from there if you really want one.

Get the info you need off the internet. Print off what you want and forget the guide books. They are rapidly becoming a thing of the past - a bit like phoneboxes. Nearly everyone that travels has a mobile phone and apart from a few die hards, less and less people travel with guide books. They are so repetitive and really not worth the riduculous price they cost new. Like others have said, go to a S/H book shop and look for them. You can pick them up for a small fraction of what they cost new.
Look out for smaller publications too. There are still many about that you can pick up S/H, very cheap.
Anything you desperately need to know, you can find on the internet for free.

Yes, we couldn't live with out them.
Get them as you go. If you live in backpacking area, you can get used pretty cheaply.
