Hello we are due to fly to Rarotonga on the 11th April via LAX from Heathrow , if everthing runs on time this should give us almost 4 hours in LA has anyone else gone this route and is 4 hours plenty of time to go through all the checks in America.
Hi ukman, yep, I've flown that route (back in 2006). 4 hours should really be plenty, and you are probably flying the same airline the whole way (Air NZ?), or at the very least they are part of the same network. That means that, even if for whatever unexpected reason, you miss your second flight, the airline will put you up in LA overnight. They might also hold the departing flight to the Cooks a little if they know folks are on the way. Once it starts being under 2 hours connecting time you need to be worried in the States, but 4 is really nothing to worry about.
Hope you are flying Air NZ, and get one of the newer planes like I did . Having in flight entertainment before takeoff was simply the best!
I had a 3 hour layover in LAX last year, BUT it was with Air France from Paris to LAX and then to Tahiti.
Somehow, they are one of a few which didn't ask to collect luggage and check in again, which happens often.
So 4 hours in your case is good enough!

See, I was wondering if this was the case! I flew the same route in 98 and thought I remembered not having to do any kind of luggage unloading etc., but wasn't 100% sure. Now that you mention it, I'm 99% sure the same applies to Air NZ on this route.
