I'm not as experienced as some other folks on the board, but I can answer a few things...
You will need two separate visas for New Zealand and Australia.
October is the start of summer/peak season down there, so I'm sure you would find work in either place. NZ's dollar is weaker and if you're looking just to travel at first then that may be a good option for you (depending on what happens in the next 6 months, of course), but I don't know if that matters to you?
Another option is WWOOFing, wherever you decide to go.
