Work opportunities for Australia VS New Zealand

I am starting to be torn as to whether I should get a WHV for Oz or New Zealand!
I'm heading over in September from Canada for 12 mths. I've been working in hospitality all my life (reception, waitress, etc) but I'm quite happy to do most anything. Alot of the places I worked in the UK on my previous WHV had accomodation available near the place of work included for a weekly fee. I do prefer to work in smaller towns and enjoy the culture of the country without blowing all my money in the big cities. With this in mind I originally thought New Zealand but would it be really that much easier to find work in Oz?

Hi there Sarah,

If you are planning on flying around the world, you might as well go all the way. New Zealand really is a beautiful place and it sounds like it’s exactly what you are after (small towns with a lot of culture).

If you do decide to spend your gap year (or two) in NZ, you’ll want to look into our Working Holiday Scheme. This is similar to Australia’s WHV (6-12 months), but even better as it lasts for a full 23 months. It applies to UK passport holders between the ages of 18 to 30.

If you’re after more information, you can read up on the working holiday scheme .

On the ground, you can find work in a big range of different industries. Here are a few links that may help you out:

Lists vacancies in hotels, cafes, restaurants, vineyards, packhouses, food processing, trades and farming. It also includes transport and accommodation information

Lists volunteer work opportunities throughout New Zealand

Lists a good variety of different backpacker specific jobs.

Hope this is helpful for you

And hey, Australia is great too! – only just a hop and a skip away (2 to 3 hour flight from most major cities).
