Travelling from LA (LAX airport) to Las Vegas takes about 5 1/2 to 6 hours if the traffic isn't bad. There's not that much to stop and see on the way except there is an old ghost town called Calico just about 10 miles east of Barstow. This is a heavily travelled route and the California highway patrol is on all portions all the time.

Also, for those who want to take the time to see the Death Valley, the turnoff is at the city of Baker. At this location is also the world's largest thermometer--where the temperature is often over 110 degrees in the summertime.
Go to Google Maps, and put in the following address: 72155 Baker Boulevard, Baker, CA to find this location (don't just put Baker, CA because there are two of them--and google gives you the wrong one in that case).

As far as driving on your own, just stay on the main road and make sure you have a car in good working order with air conditioning (for the summer) or a heater (for those frozen winters). The road from LA to Las Vegas is all freeway (motorway), but it goes over a 9,000 foot mountain about 1/3 of the way into the trip--and then through the largest desert in the US on the last 2/3rds of the trip.

Cal, if you are referring to Cajon Pass on Interstate 15, the Cajon Summit is actually at an elevation of 4,190 ft (1,280 m), still a moderate climb. Our visitor can expect slow moving trucks in the right lanes of this grade, and should keep to the left with the flow of car traffic. Don't forget the Baker Grade (north of Baker) which climbs up to Halloran Summit. If that run is made in the hot summer, our guest should keep an eye on the vehicle water temperature gauge (if so equipped) and be prepared to shut off the vehicle air conditioning for 17 miles to avoid possible overheating.

I am booking flights to go to Los Angeles in the summer. I am a first time traveller and was wondering if there is recommendations of places to go whilst travelling from LA to LV? Also, is it safe to travel in my own in these parts of America?

Why not just fly in to Vegas and save yourself some time and money..
