firstly is it possible to apply for a working holiday visa once i'm in nz?
As far as I'm aware, these working holiday visas always have to be applied for whilst outside of the country. I know in the past folks would do a visa run to NZ to get a WH visa for Australia for example, so the same might be possible the other way around (see Sander's answer instead!)
And has any one travelled around nz and worked for free accommodation be it on a farm or in hostel itself? i've heard this is possible and could be answer to my prayers lol, if so do i need a whv?
What you are looking for is probably , Willing Work On Organic Farms. As that work is basically on a voluntary basis you shouldn't actually need a whv for it, but having just checked the FAQ on the WWOOF website, they say the following:
Q: What type of visa do I need?
A: Although hosts consider WWOOFers to be volunteering, the Immigration Dept consider volunteering while getting food and accommodation to be work. Working Holiday Visas and Student Visas are ideally suited to WWOOFing. WWOOF can unfortunately not provide any assistance to gain visas.
That to me reads like kind of a non-answer to the question, as they are basically leaving the door open, but want to state that officially the immigration department doesn't view it the same way. I think it'd be incredibly weird to ask volunteers to have to have a whv, but there you have it
Oh, and you'll need to buy the book in advance which contains all the farmers details. it's 40 or 50 NZD, depending on whether you want the actual printed book besides the online info.

Yes, it is. From the (taking the UK one, since you fail to specify where you're from):
To be eligible You must: <snip> AND If you are already in New Zealand you also need to hold a valid temporary permit.
(Generally I'd recommend applying before going over, though.)

Yes, you do need a WHV for that type of work; that you're being paid in food and accommodation rather than in money doesn't make any difference to the immigration department. (Also see the first FAQ item on .) I've worked at hostels for free accommodation when I was over there; generally speaking they want some sort of minimum commitment for how long you'll stay (in the order of 2-3 weeks) so they don't have to constantly retrain new cleaners, but other than that it's a very viable way to stretch your money. You just need to be lucky that they need someone when you're there.
