I am looking into spending time traveling abroad. How much should money is needed for a year long trip? I want to live on little, but also have the option of splurging on occasion. If you have done this can you share your budget as well as the places you went to? Thanks.
Bulgaria, Serbia.... £1,500 a year - easy, Iceland, Norway.... £1,500 a month - at a squeeze.
A bit more specific would lend a hand.

There are around 180+ countries out there.
At this point I'm up for best suggestions. Nowhere specific in mind.
If I could live anywhere for £1500 a year, I'd seriously consider moving there. With respect, it sounds almost too good to be true and I'd like to know what that includes.
Begs the obvious question though - what exactly does 'living on a little' mean for different people? My idea of luxury is hot water to get clean and having a quiet place to sleep. Interesting topic.

It would be nice to have hot water, although I suppose there are more important things like a safe, quiet (as you suggested) place to stay. Of course, if it is winter, I would prefer the hot water
A year away on a budget you would probably be looking at either Asia or South America.
Work out the exchange rate and look up a few accommodation prices. Get an idea about how much the day to day living is. How you want to travel once you get there. There are places in different countries where you may be able to stay and do some volunteer work e.g.: Elephant Sanctuary North Vietnam or other things of interest that may give accommodation and food in exchange for help. Often you can get work Teaching English to earn a few bucks. Search for the possibilities. Good luck
The first few times I came to Asia I was wasting money all over the place on food which Expat places charge silly money for basic grub to Hotels who would rip me off for electric charges to Taxi drivers who would charge me double because they said the meter no work.
After a few trips its all about learning the ropes, now I use stand by flights, I eat mostly Thai food, I use buses to travel around as they are the same price for Thai's as they are for me.
I stay long-term in a good budget guest house and my room has A/C, fan, fridge, TV, DVD player, in room safe, en-suite, hot water shower, Tea/coffee maker, table & chairs, not a massive room and little over 100 quid a month and the electric meter is outside the room so I can check it.
I booked it long term before and was travelling to China for a few weeks last year, that turned into me doing some voluntary work there and I told the guesthouse who I did a deal with as they wanted some books from China which I bought back with me and got 10 free breakfasts as well as the cash back so a good way of saving a few quid.
The breakfasts incidentally are all day English breakfast for 90baht so a good saving, I have done the same when I have been to Cambodia too, Dave is always looking for new or used books and he has a great book idea where you buy say a used book for 100 baht (2 quid) when you finish it you return it for half that off the next book, he also trades in all books from anywhere.

I think you need to figure out what you want - travel for a year, moving from place to place, never staying long in one spot or live in a different country for a year.
Travelling abroad and being on the move takes a completely different budget than living somewhere. The main reason for this is that if you are not moving you do not have to pay for transport, this is especially a factor in expensive places such as Europe. Plus if you are staying somewhere fixed you can rent an appartment instead of paying for a hotel room, this also gives you the opportunity to cook for yourself. Again, money saved.
If you go on a RTW trip for a whole year you can reasonably plan on needing around 10k-20k USD plus cost of flight tickets which start at around 3000 USD IIRC.
If you go abroad and volunteer in some Third World country, living in a remote mountain village with no running water but free lodging in exchange for teaching English or doing something else equally useful you might get by on around 1500 USD for the whole year (plus the flight ticket and the fees you might pay for the volunteer program, thus ending up at around 4000 USD; not to mention that 1500 USD is really low, 2000-3000 plus cost of flights and volunteer program fees would be more realistic).
Taking the middle road, there are quite a number of countries where you can live comfortably on 200-400 USD per month. Move every 2-4 months or so and you are looking at around 6000-8000 USD total, including the flight tickets. Countries which would be interesting in this regard: Egypt, Syria, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Indonesia, several sub-saharan African countries, maybe some countries in South America.
My personal travel experience: I've studied abroad in Palestine for a semester, worked at a summer camp in the USA and travelled extensively around the Middle East and Europe. So I know exactly what it costs to live somewhere in a foreign country as compared to being on the move.
