Planning a car trip through Finland. Would like to see the most interesting sights. Any recommendations?
Through Finland? How do you mean- what would be your starting/finishing points? Finland's quite long and sparsely populated, and I'm assuming you're not finishing or starting in the most northern parts of Lapland..? Do you have a car, or are you planning on renting one? What are you interested in- cities, culture, going out, nature... I'm happy to give you a few tips if you give me an idea of route/duration/time of year/budget/interests.
Thanks for the quick response, and ALL of your questions are VERY logical.
We are doing a "self guided" car tour of Scandinavia beginning in early July of 2011. We begin in Oslo, on to Bergen where we (including our car) take the Hurtigruten mail boat up the coast of Norway. We will get off the boat (with the car) at Kirkenes. We have relatives in Southern Sweden, so that is our Scandinavia end goal; eventually we will drive onward to Germany.
We are retired, so time is not an issue for us. Originally we planned to drive to Helsinki, from Kirkenes, and take the ferry to Stockholm. We found a map that shows a ferry from Vaasa to Umea, so we thought, as an alternative, of taking that ferry. However, we do not want to miss any "special" sights in Finland.
Not certain regarding the route through Finland. We are REALLY open to suggestions. We are interested in cultural, historical, and nature. We both enjoy photography and will probably fill up several memory cards during our visit. We enjoy nice hotels but also "special" bed & breakfast recommendations.
We take vacations and we also take "adventures." We envision our trip to Finland to be an adventure. We are looking forward to seeing wildlife; meeting new and interesting people and seeing beautiful sights.
Again, thank you for responding. We REALLY appreciate exchanging emails with someone familiar with Finland.
Kind regards,
Marly & Harold Wilson
