So me and a friend both 25 are looking to start travelling across USA in June for 3 months, going to try doing it by driving and flying, have a few places in mind to visit, looking for advise on best places to visit, any additions and opinions appricated. And looking for advise on where best to spend 4th July. These are a few places we have in mind so far
I travelled the whole east coast (chicago-miami-wash-philly-new york-vermont-boston) in a month before with a train pass - was a cheap way to cover almost all my transport costs apart from the odd internal flight. I've also done a 'W' across the North America with flights.
As for 4th July - I think the Southern states tend to go all-out for the celebrations.
My fave spots were Santa Cruz (setting of the film the lost boys) San Francisco, Chicago, New York (why's the city that never sleeps not on your list?) Portland, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Vermont (for snowboarding at Stowe).
Places that underwhelmed me: Miami, Florida in general, Toronto, San Diego.
I think you could work out the cost of travelling, car rental etc. Maybe hire a car in california and drive up coastal highway 101 (amazing views on windy coastal edge - very special drive), get the train on east coast and fly a couple other places. Focus more on what you want to do when you get there, not the place itself.
Your list of places is very jumbled. Try printing a map and start inserting some pins in the places you want to visit (yes, old-school planning). This will help you get and idea of the "flow" of your travels. It may help you knock off some places that don't fit the flow (too isolated or off the path) or maybe add a few more areas of interest.
Pay special attention to the scale of the map. Distances will be huge! Ireland is about 84 000 sq km, that is about the same size as the State of South Carolina (83K sq km)...

My first impression is that Chicago and Miami might not fit in well, but with 3 months, you can still go there if it is important to you.

I agree with TeflonCDN - the natural flow of destinations will help make the trip more seeing places and less airport terminals
Best known 4th of July place is the Washington Mall (area between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial) in Washington, D. C.
There are always free concerts there into the evening----but-----
my favorite spots to go for the 4th of July are in the southern portion of California--because the weather is usually very nice;--generally much nicer (cooler) than in Washington DC in July, but still a warm summer day. I like to either go to Bolsa Chica State Beach (along the Pacific Ocean) just north of Huntington Beach, California--or else to Lacy Park in San Marino, CA.
Bolsa Chica is where people spend the day with their picnics and day at the beach simultaneously and then set up to do their cooking at the many fire pits up and down the beach at night. Generally everyone if fairly mellow, although you should know that the parking spots will all be full by no later than 10 in the morning--so get there early if you plan to spend the day--and take an umbrella or sun-block if you plan to be ther all day.
Lacy Park is one of the nicest mid-sized parks you'll ever see--and starting around 11AM -12 noon everyone will show up there to have picnics and then spend the day playing different games in the park. Only place I've ever been where I've seen games of pick-up baseball, soccer, football, frisbee throwing (people and with dogs), kite-flying, tag, horseshoe throwing and about six other games all going on at the same time (and sometimes overlapping each other simultaneously (land-wise) with no one getting upset--and 70 picnics going on just a few feet away. Hilarious.
All of the places listed will have free firework shows at night--but then that's true at 1000s of public parks all across the US. This is what we Americans do on our Independence Day.

Agree with Calcruzer, there will be fireworks everywhere you go. I would stop in vegas!! Haha I don't know if the Grand Canyon has fireworks.....I'm thinking, no...anyone been there on 4th of July yet?
You definitely should narrow down your choices. It will be impossible to hit each place on your list in 3months time. Each place feels like an endless list of things to do by itself. Trust me, I've tried lol
You know what I did on my road trip? I checked out all the things to do in each place and jotted down what I really wanted to see and picked out the top 6 places with the most places to see and possible things to do in a time frame. It made my trip so organized and it made me stay on schedule. Have you tried shopping around like that yet?
Hi, I just finished a 43 state R.V trip around America. Your trip will be costly, you can see everything, but you will be on the road way to much...Trust me when I say you can leave off Mt. Rushmore, New Orleans and Grace land...But if you drive right by stop. Anyway, good luck and go to South beach in Miami,Ny,NY and the Cape...but it will be costly. .... smiles
