Hostels/Hotels Southeast Asia

I'm unsure whether to book some hotels/hostels before I go. Although my itinerary isn't set in stone, I'm worried that I'll get somewhere and there won't be anywhere for me to sleep!
Am I better off booking somewhere and then cancelling it if my plans change? or should I just wing it
I'm travelling to Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia

I wouldn't bother booking in advance, except your first couple of nights so you know you've got somewhere to go to when you arrive. We travelled around the region for 3 months and never struggled to find somewhere to stay by just turning up in each place.

Close to Christmas - New Years Holidays even cheap places could be full. Off season you can get many places with a walk-in or even a phone call.

Ask for some hotel recommendations so you have a few places to head for. When you ask for hotel help also include a specific price range.

It does depend on if you are going low season or high season as to availability. Low season is when the weather might be bad.

I've recently done Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia in high season (Dec to Mar) and there still seemed to be lots of rooms about.

Your only problem if flying is that airline seats do fill up in the busy period, particularly going to Asia from the UK.

As said, book the first few nights so you get chance to sort yourself out. Lots of internet cafes about to book other rooms.

Sorry! Should have mentioned, I'm going July/Aug so Low season.
I have booked my first 3 nights stay in Bangkok, from then on I have nothing
