Songkran 2014

Hey Guys,

Hey,

I am!

I'm heading to Bangkok, what about you?

Are you travelling round Asia or just going for Songkran?

Mollie :D

Yea, I'm planing on landing in Bangkok about a week before. Not sure if I will stay in BKK or head north to Chiang Mai for songkran.

I plan on travelling around SE Asia until I run out of money!

What about you?

Oh, fair enough!

Cool, where are you planning on going and is Songkran your first stop?

I'm aiming to fly from Cairns to Bangkok end of March, from Bangkok go through Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos, then back down through Thailand, to Thai islands, then back to Bangkok for the end of June.

Mollie :D

Hey Mollie,

I'm planing on going up to Loas than traveling from Hanoi to Saigon. After that I'm not really sure. I'm not really commiting to anything because I know my plans could easily change.

I'm travelling solo. What about you?

Hi,

What a good idea to come to Thailand during Songkran. That's the best time of year and definitely something to experience.
Unfortunately I have never tried it in Chiang Mai (I heard a lot about it though) but I can say that it's really fun in Bangkok.
You can party in many different places, but the main ones are of course Khao San Road, RCA, and Silom street (be prepared for a lot of water and people). You might become scared of water after the 3 days though ahaha.

If you're willing to do it in a more traditional way, you are also able to meet people who will show you how the festivities are celebrated in temples or houses.

How are you planning your visas and all?

Think I'm definitely going to be in Bangkok for Songkran!

Island hopping beforehand, then heading in Cambodia afterwards :D

Bumping this thread up!!!!

Is anyone planning on being in Thailand for Songkran? I will be booking a one way plane ticket to Bangkok soon and plan to leave on April 8. Still not sure where I will be celebrating. What about everyone else?

Yes, I am planning to come over there about a week ago.

Songkran is NOT a spectator sport. Some cities are worse than other. (Pattaya for instance where Songkran seems to go on forever!)

If you are around active festivities YOU will be soaked! Including cell phones, cameras, computers, wallets, purses, shopping, shoes, etc., etc. So dress accordingly and keep wallet and camera in a plastic bag. Sometimes the water is not clean so keep your mouth shut. Sometimes trucks go by pumping out water at you. Water can hit you from above, just hope there is no turd in the water. (I said keep mouth shut!)

When booking one way tickets (from Canada??) to Thailand you have a few things to consider. Depending on the airline you use some one way flights from N. America can cost almost the same as round trip tickets. (Using normal full service airlines.) You must do the math on this because sometimes from N. America you could save $1000 with round trip. Entering Thailand with one way flight means you must buy a tourist visa. Some airlines may question you with a one way flight to Thailand. Maybe not even board you without a visa. (The free 30 day Visa Exemption that Canadian passport holders get flying in requires a round trip flight or proof of onward travel.)

Round trip ticket gives you a deadline for when to head for home. This allows you to plan a budget out knowing how much per day you have available. Probably a cheaper plane ticket too. Flying between nearby countries or even using land travel is not expensive. Plus you can not just show up in Thailand and stay as long as you want. Maybe check visa requirements for other countries too. Recent change for G7 countries means that Canadians can get a free 30 day Visa Exemption when entering overland too.

Happy New Year.
