Value-for-money hotel in Greece with swimming pool/+sea view

Basic, but very nice setting. Huge pool on the beach. Very nice village, with some typical tavernas too: http://www.kalivaki.com/Studios.htm

This one on Santorini: http://www.booking.com/hotel/gr/hellas.nl.html?aid=311093;label=hotel-17835-gr-1JGoN3HNymc*etRKpWXC_wS3724463514:pl:ta:p1:p2:ac:ap1t1:neg;ws=&gclid=CKqZtMyhjLkCFbLMtAodjEIAbA

Hellas hotel, Fira, Santorini. 8 min walk from the city center. Owner is taxi driver too and can pick you up at the airport. Right across the street a good taverna: Simos!

Santorini has a unique landscape and actually slightly different architecture from other Cycladic islands ( interesting read here: http://users.ntua.gr/kamy/reconstruction.pdf )
But generic Cycladic architecture is to be found all over ...well, the Cyclades islands.

I am a bit confused on your criteria. I would think deciding on specific island is more important than specific hotel...

Anyhow, on September, especially towards the end of the month, I would stick with Syros, Tinos, Paros, Naxos , Santorini, Mykonos which will be busier than other islands.

Maybe check Naxos Resort Hotel (St George,Naxos), St Andrea (Naoussa, Paros), Yria (Parasporos, Paros).

E-mail hotels directly and ask for a deal (Booking.com and such, cut a 10-15% commision to hotels)

Dear all, thank you for your answers!

Dear Mariha2912, thank you very much! You are very right. In fact I do have difficulties with choosing an island that suits me completely (traditional, with beautiful landscape and not with boring residential blocks - Crete was interesting museumwise, but many cityscapes there were boring - , might be quiet, but with interesting things to see and to do). So thank you very much for your detailed answer! this information is not easy to come by, even though I read many guidebooks on Greece. I will also read the survey on Santorini architecture when I'am back from my work trip.
Still, choosing the hotel is also important - may be you have the right Island, but do not have a hotel that suits your needs
Lisa

You are welcome : )

You may want to look closely at Naxos, especially if hiring a car for a day or two. There are many inland and even mountain traditional villages where time seems to stand still. Sea-side there are long sandy beaches. Naxos Town holds a large permanent population, there are some newly-built neighborhoods but old town area features Cycladic and Venetian architecture. By the harbour, portata, standing gate of a never-finished Apollo temple welcomes you. There is an old small archeological museum that features one of the finest Cycladic collections of the world. A tiny excavation near Metropoli church shows you layers of the ancient city. Venetian museum in old town organizes varied sunset concerts till end of September. All over the island there are Venetian watchtowers, Byzantine small churches, ancient ruins, unfinished kouros ling on the ground... Local products such as famous sweet potatoes and graviere cheese of Naxos readily available on local taverns... Up on Chalki village you may visit the Kitron distillery, a local digestive coming on different flavors......
