hey, so I'm travelling alone starting January 2014, I'm starting in south east Asia and travelling there for around 2 months,
I then plan on going to Australia and travelling the east coast with a working visa for around 9 months, and then ending the trip in north america for a few months.
if anyone's doing a similar thing or has any tips etc. let me know

I'm planning to go on a world tour starting Feb'14 (incl. India,HK,China,Northern and the east coast of the USA). You'll find a more detailed route in my post "Recommendations, tipps and travel partners".
Maybe we can catch up somewhere if our tour is similar somehow. Do you have any specific plans for SE Asia? I spent four months in Vietnam last year, maybe I can give you some more information if you're planning to go there aswell.

do you already have any specific plans for VN? I was located in Saigon (Ho chi Minh City) for four months during an internship but I also had the opportunity to travel through the country.
Some places to visit are definetly Mui Ne with great beaches, especially for wind or kyte surfing (this is what some friends of mine did a lot). It's only 4h by bus from Saigon. I also spent a weekend on Phu Quoc, the small tiny island in the south of Vn. It's just amazing. The beaches are beautiful and the sea aswell. I can recommend Casia Cottage, it's located directly at the beach and the staff is very friendly - and the breakfast is amazing.
Concerning Saigon, honestly I did not spend so much time on touristic things. However, there is a lot to discover - the Chu Chi tunels or the Notre Dame Church, some interesting museum. On the way up north I flew to Hoi An, the most beautiful place I have ever seen. Gosh, it's just sweet. You really have to go there. You can also take the bus from Hoi An to Hue, this is a more histortical and cultural city, but also worth a visit. From Hue I took the overnight bus to Hanoi, which was a bit an adventure but also the cheapest and easiest way to overcome the distance..and somehow it was also very funny.
Don't forget about the changes in climate when you're up north in Hanoi. I spent the night from Hue to Hanoi in shorts and shirt..unfortunately, we arrived in Hanoi with less than 18° rain and dust -.-
Hanoi was not really my favourite city, but I guess it was the weather :P I am not quite sure if I do have to mention it, but you HAVE to go to Halong Bay. I spent one night on a boat, and the view was just amazing - even if the temperature was not really for swimming.
I have some friends who went on a trip to Sapa aswell, the pics looked amazing but I can't really mention some information here.
One thing concerning VN and Cambodia - I made a weekend trip to Shianoukville - they have some great white beaches in Cambodia there. We took the bus early in the morning from Saigon to Phnom Penh and from Phnom Penh to Shianoukville. I guess it took us about the whole day, but we only paid about $15. However, you really need some good nerves when traveling by bus ;-) But you get used to it.

ahh..one more thing about saigon - I guess you already heard some nice stories about the traffic there ;-) I had my own motorbike, but only for the last two months in Vietnam. The first months I went with a motorbike-taxi (called "Xéom"). If you want I can give you the mobile number from my one, he was the best and cutest one, always ten minutes to early and I could really send him a message to pick me up anytime and everywhere :D

I will be ending a 3 month trip in Asia at the end of Jan until Feb 8th. So i will be in Asia for about 2 weeks, pretty flexible as to what i see. I just need to fly out from Bangkok.

I arrive Thailand end nov, plan on spending month in thailand until after xmas., then perhaps go to cambodia for nye
