Travelling alone to Oz Jan 2014

Hey, I'm Hannah, I'm 24 and I'm hopefully going to travel over to Australia, probably Sydney first, beginning of jan 2014. I've never travelled alone before and it would be great to speak to anyone who will be out there at the same time or who has been and has any advice. I don't really have a plan as such. I definitely want to travel around but will probably need to work while I'm there.

Hey Hannah, you sound in exactly the same position as me. I'm heading over in Jan, flying to the south coast and planning to travel about and see the sights.

I'm 28, never travelled alone before. I've only been abroad three times! Just looking about to see who'll be going around the same time. Have you booked your flights yet? x

Hi Hannah, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you looking to meet a travel partner? Have you anything booked as of yet? Where abouts are you from?x

Hey! It would be great to know some people before I go!
I haven't booked any flights yet but provisonally 13th jan.
Are either of you planning on working while you are there?
I live in Manchester at the minute.
X

Hi,

I'm also travelling to Sydney beginning of January and looking for a travel buddie!

Ellen

Great girls, I haven't got anything booked yet either but looking at December/January. I'm from Blackpool so not too far from Manchester. Yes planning on working out there too as I can't imagine my money will last too long x

Ooo I'm really pleased you guys will be out there at the same time.
Hope this isn't too personal a question but how much money to you plan to take initially? I know we have to have 5000 AUS dollars to be let in. I'm definitely going to work.
I was also considering booking like a week your of Sydney for when I arrive so that they sort out bank account and SIM card and things like that, something less to worry about, anyone else planning on doing this? Xx

I live in Manchester myself until I go. Currently just working to save up. As Han says, $5000AUS is the minimum but I'm hoping to have saved roughly 5k (English) by the time I leave . I have one mate who left in July and he's recently emailed saying he feels he should have taken more (he took £3k) but he was pretty slow in finding work and like a drink ha.

With regards to the tour, I wasn't thinking of doing anything like that. I reckon getting a bank account/sim should be straightforward enough, plus there's loads of advice and guidance on the Aussie immigration website. I'm just going to book my hostel, flights, head on over then hopefully find my feet when I'm there. Risky? Maybe!

I agree the more money the better although I know I will definitely have to work to get some more funds. I have a place to stop over in Perth a family friend who lives out there so unsure as to wether or not to head there to find my feet and find travel buddies. Or go it alone and meet people in Sydney. I looked into booking with STA travel for bank sim cards and tours etc but it can become pricey xx
