Cairns to Sydney

Hi guys... how long will it take to go from Cairns to Sydney in a motor home.
I have 12 days and would like to pick your brains on where I need to stop and places to see.
Any ideas or suggestions would be nice.
Many thanks....Garry.

My recommendation: Don't do it. You'd have to spend 6 days driving 5-6 hours each day, and would only have the remaining 6 days to actually see things. Just Sydney by itself would already deserve those 6 days to see properly. Not much benefit from driving the distance, either. Lots and lots of very boring and unchanging scenery.
If you can't take significantly more time for this trip, consider doing just a third or so of the distance, and flying the rest of the way. (Maybe Cairns to Mackay? That way you can spend a few days in and around Cairns, then do Townsville, Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, maybe Eungella National Park (great place to spot a platypus in the wild), and then flying from there to Sydney.) Should also help you with the cost you complained about in the other thread, as that's probably correlated to interstate one-way fees.

Hi Sander,
Thanks for the reply, Guess my post was clear in my head but when it came to type it I forgot half of the information.
I will be spending 7 nights in and around Cairns prior to my trip to Sydney.
The last part of my trip I will be spending 7 nights in Sydney itself, the motor home is for the bit in between if that makes any sense I have 12 days to go from Cairns to Sydney.
I agree there is so much to see in Cairns and Sydney.
The last time over in Australia I took a Motor home from Sydney into the Blue mountains, over to the Hunter valley and back to Brisbane over 8 days and this was fine.
I'm not bothered about the driving bit I just want to make sure Of the best places to stay.
You still recon its too far with this in Mind Sander.
Regards Garry

Okay, that does sound a bit better. I'd still say it's an extremely long way to drive, and I'd personally prefer to see a shorter bit in depth and skipping over the rest for a next trip, but if you fully realize that you'll have to drive three times as much as on that Sydney to Brisbane drive you describe, in only 50% more time, and this doesn't scare you, then more power to you.

So yeah, places to stop from Cairns to Mackay as already mentioned (particularly Eungella National Park; Mackay itself can be bypassed). I haven't done the Mackay to Brisbane stretch myself, but have heard good things about Bundaberg, and Fraser Island is one of the main tourist stops. Around Brisbane, I was strangely enamored of Surfers Paradise. Beyond that, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie are, I guess, the most obvious stopping points. Though I guess it also depends a bit on what your interests are in seeing on the way. More national parks and wildlife, or more towns and culture?
