Azores

Thinking of visiting the Azores at xmas, staying in Ponta Delgada and hiring a car. Any tips for things to see and do? We're interested in geothermal features as well as hiking, architecture, history. Thanks :-)

I've been to the Azores a couple of years ago, but only stayed on the main island Sao Miguel. But this island is perfect for exploring it by car.

For the geothermal features I can recommend driving to Furnas. It's a weird sight to see this village covered with the fumes that come from the earth! The rotten-egg-odor is all over the town. . Make a stop at the Lake of Furnas too, it is a nice hike around this lake. There's an old church.

Another interesting geothermal place is the Caldeira Velha, a hot water source. One the short hike from the parkingarea you'll pass several bubbling muddpools.

One of the most beautiful hikes I ever made was at the Sete Cidades. A must if you are visiting the island. it is possible to hike around them and at the northwestern part you'll see the ocean on one side and the depths of the old volcano on the other. It's beautiful. Reserve a whole day for this hike. If the winds are strong the hiking can be quite rough though. , and .

For architecture: Nossa Senhora de Paz. Also a I made there. Ponta Delgada is nice too.

(I just saw that is was 2007 when I visited and made those photos, in the mean time my skills and gear have improved... )

Thanks for that :-) Looks great.

For now we have changed plans and instead booked flights to Korea (slight difference! !) as the Azores rainfall chart looked scary, so it's on our list for summertime.
