Depends where you go. If you have £4,000 when you get to Australia, I'd say It'd last around 3 months. In New Zealand 3 to 4 months and in Thailand it could you last you six months plus.
As for meeting people, it is very easy. You'll have no problems and will meet plenty when you get out there.
Since you're on a tight budget your choices are simple... 1.) If you choose expensive destinations like Australia and New Zealand then you have to investigate Work Permits and how to secure employment because without a job you'll be broke in no time, or 2.) Go to an inexpensive destination like SE Asia, South America, Indian Subcontinent, etc. where your funds will last a long time.

As mentioned above, NZ is not a cheap destination (nor is Aus). A return airfare back to the UK will be at least GBP1000 and then here accommodation and food isn't exactly cheap (a 500ml glass of beer in a pub in Auckland is about NZD8, over GBP4!). On the plus side, wages aren't too bad - the minimum wage is NZD13.75 (GBP7) per hour. Look at Seek http://www.seek.co.nz/ to see if there's anything job-wise going - if you can get something before you arrive in NZ, that'd be better for you. You will need a working holiday visa from NZ Immigration http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/workingholiday/
