hello
My partner and I have decided that next year-hopefully april/may 2014 were going to travel to oz to work for a year on a working visa...
ONE PROBLEM! WE HAVENT GOT A CLUE WHERE TO START!!!
We've been scouring the net but all i seem to be getting is thousands and thousands of pages with rather confusing information.
So does anyone know where to start? where's the best place to get a job where living is affordable?
How much are we looking at for hostels/ accomodation?
It really doesn't matter much where you start. Sydney is the biggest hub, so has the most international flights arriving there, but Melbourne is right behind it. As the two biggest cities in Australia, they have the most jobs - but are also the most expensive to live in. Perth, Cairns (outside the wet season of December through March), Brisbane and even Adelaide would work just as well.
For most types of work - if you want to get a bit more of a feel for the real Australia, I'd recommend getting out of those big cities, and then it really doesn't matter much where you started from. The whole idea with a working holiday visa is that you get to travel around the country, and when you find a place you like, you can just settle down there for a bit and start working. (Of course, if you have a specialized or highly in demand skill, this differs. For example, I did web development, and then it just makes sense to stay in the big cities, as that's where all the projects are.)
For an average budget, count on AUD $75/day (giving you accommodation in small dorm rooms in good quality hostels, supermarket food to cook your own meals with, and public transport around the country). When you settle down to work for more than a few weeks, a room in a share house is much cheaper than staying in a hostel, allowing you to save up much more swiftly. To get a bit of an impression of how hostel prices fluctuate, look at the here on the site, and price out some different time periods in different locations; note how the big cities tend to be way more expensive than the small towns, etc.

Oh dear, English as a second language fail again. I think what the OP means is, where to start in the process. Sander you need to stop making a blanket statement that Cairns has a wet season from December to March. Every year is different. If they took your advice, and came in April they would have found rain almost everyday through to June and even into July. And from December to March it hardly rained at all, there really wasn't a typical wet at all.
I'm sure you will be along to delete this as you do everything that contradicts with whatever you say, so I wont bother giving the OP any other advice, other than start with the Make sure you fit with the criteria, apply, (but only when you are really ready to go), get your ticket and go. As to where to go, you do need to do some research and find out what you want from the trip.

That is quite possible. Given the repetition of "where to start" in "So does anyone know where to start? where's the best place to get a job where living is affordable?", I took "where" to be only about a location (also since "where to start? sydney or melbourne" and variations on that is one of the more common questions on this forum - but that might have given me the wrong expectation for this thread).
Anyway, Sophie, James, the URL Dodger gave is indeed the most helpful link for the process of getting the Visa itself. That site is also the place where you should actually order a WHV; anywhere else would be a third party, charging you more.
