Planning my trip...girl finally doing it alone

Hiya

In 2009 I left the UK to travel South-East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. I was 30 years old and before that I hadn’t ever been outside of Europe.

I never for one moment felt that I stood out like a sore thumb, age was never an issue.

In Australia I would recommend the YHA hostels and in New Zealand the BBH hostels. There are so many places to see and do in Australia and New Zealand, it is difficult to pick a few out! I preferred New Zealand to Australia and along with many people I loved the South Island of New Zealand in particular.

Obviously I’m not female, but I’d say you’d have less safety worries travelling alone in Australia and New Zealand than you would over here. Also I doubt you will be alone for long – you’ll meet plenty of people along the way!

I take it you have your working visa’s sorted for New Zealand and Australia? If not get them sorted asap seeing as you are 30!

Hey, Thank you for your advise

I'm in the process of sorting out the visas now so I will hopefully I'll be ok...nothing like leaving it to the last possible minute to consider travelling lol :P

Thanks

As long as you get them before you turn 31 you are fine! Both of the visa’s I got almost immediately, there wasn’t much of a wait.

Hey

I've just come back from travelling around Oz and most of my friends that I met out there were in the late twenties/early thirties bracket! I think when you're travelling you're attracted to like minded people and if you want to avoid the 18 year old party backpacker scene, there's plenty of ways to do that but still have fun.

Likewise I'd recommend YHA hostels as you get all sorts in there (from the normal to the weird and wonderful lol). I'm a girl and I travelled alone (at 23) and I never felt in any danger. Australia is a pretty safe place and it's just a case of don't do anything there that you wouldn't do at home (e.g walking down dark lonely alleys etc).

Packing - arrghh! I don't think you're ever fully prepared lol. There's always something you'll need/forget! Personally, my Lonely Planet Australia book was a must - hefty but it's got loads of info in it. Same with my Kindle - great for long journeys. Waterproofs, sunglasses and a hat are a must. Sun cream I'd buy over there as it's better value/higher SPF which is needed.

I hope that's some help! Enjoy it - Oz is amazing and you'll meet plenty of people your own age! If you want any more advice, feel free to message me

Hey, Wow thank you for that you have both sent my mind at ease.

I like to have fun and party but i don't think i could do it constantly lol

thank you so much ill be in touch if i think of any thing else. Its all getting very exciting now i hope it will be worth me packing in my job haha :P

ah well you only live once :P

Is it difficult to find work while out there?

Also how much money do you take with you roughly?

Thanks again

I found a good, well paid job in the centre of Sydney within a week of arriving. Maybe it was the fact I was 30 and had quite a bit of experience on my CV that helped, but I had no problems at all.

Australia is VERY expensive and New Zealand quite expensive as well. When you get a job you will be ok, as my pay was greater than I have ever earnt over there.

I was spending around £300 a week when I was travelling and that was being extremely frugal, ie rarely going out, making all my own food, etc.

Hi, I'm also 30 and plan on going to Oz around the same time as you. Been thinking the exact thing, that I've left it too late but seeing this post has made me feel a lot better.

I've also rented my house out and will have to quit my job so need to make tis worthwhile!!

Where are you thinking of starting on Oz?

Hey. I am 31 and left in June of last year just after turning 30 to travel for year around Africa and Asia. I had the same concerns as you about my age. Parts of Asia are very young and at times the gap year kids did annoy me but I soon learnt how to tailor my trip to avoid the younger crowd. I got back a few weeks ago and am off to Australia in December and again have the same concerns, that ill be surround by 18-21 year olds but its nice to hear there are people the same age as me heading out there! If you need any tips on where to go, ask away! Xx
