When booking accommodation on Hostelworld there is the option to pay extra (from £1) to protect your deposit, so in the event of a cancellation the deposit can be transferred to another booking. This is quite a nice option to have and I was wondering if this is something that TP could incorporate into the accommodation booking system?
Unfortunately they don't make this available to us at all. And with multiple providers, we would need them both to support a way of handling credits for future bookings. We've actually raised this with both of them quite a few times with no luck.
Not sure if there's any other ways we can do it in a roundabout way, but that's the current status with that particular issue.

The 10% deposits that you pay hostelworld.com, plus their service fees, go straight into their pockets, and the hostels themselves either lose money, or have to charge higher rates in order to offset their losses.

Well yes, but in return for that marketing expense they get a huge captive audience from HW and their network of affiliates and they don't have to deal with the technical hassle of setting up an online payment system. 10% is actually a pretty small percentage for accommodation providers to pay. With the bigger players like Booking, etc. it is closer to 20%. This is just part of doing business for an accommodation provider.
