I'm a UK passport holder, planning on visiting the following: Singapore, Malaysia, Bangkok, Australia, New Zealand and USA.
Of those I think only Australia might ask for proof of onward travel. If you plan to stay there for a long time they will probably ask for proof of funds. If there is even a slight possibility of working there, do get a work visa as some without a work visa and sufficient money have been put on the next plane home.
You will need an Australian visa, and six months left on your passport when you leave most of these countries.
You can buy a Round The World ticket to NZ with stopovers in Asia on the way out and America on the way back and leave dates blank, being aware that you usually cannot walk into an airport and say you want to fly that day. They usually need notice.
Buying all your tickets separately can be expensive. I know flying from Asia to NZ is very expensive. I have had travel agents on KSR in Bangkok apologise that it costs so much.
Adding America to a RTW trip really increases the price and you would be better going through Asia there and back and booking America as a separate trip, maybe at a later date.

Cyberia, have you heard of folks being questioned upon arrival in Australia? I'm arriving on the 12th on my W&HV and am wondering if I should pack documents with me. I know they said they may ask in the application but they did not and nothing was mentioned about questioning at immigration. I don't want to be turned around at the gate and sent home just because I didn't pack the necessary paperwork. Thoughts? Have you talked to anyone directly who has been questioned?
Thanks!
Dani
