Hey fellow travellers!
NZ's not cheap! A pint (450mL) of beer in a pub is at least NZD8.50 and eating out is similarly priced too. You're unlikely to get a dorm bed anywhere in NZ for less than NZD20 (see http://www.bbh.co.nz/default.aspx) and Naked Bus (http://nakedbus.com/nz/bus/) might be the cheapest way to travel about the country unless you hitch-hike which is not always safe here.
The up-side is that, having met loads of travellers touring South America and Asia recently, nearly everyone who had been to NZ said it was their favourite country.

On average I spent about $140 a week on grocery's. But I wasn't really budgeting. If you cut meat out a couple of times a week, you can probably do it for less.
I think you'd have a better idea of what is essential to you. The only thing I can think is good clothing for bad weather can be pretty expensive. But a trip to the thrift store can have you fitted out well enough, if not a bit color uncoordinated.
