Link Corner Hostel is a great place meeting people - a bit far from the party streets but it's located close to the skytrain and it want take long to get around by taxi or tuk-tuk.
If want closer to the party Khao San Rd. Is the place, there is party every night , and the hostels are plenty

Hey, I'm planning on heading over there around August/ September. I heard Thailand is the best to start off since you'll meet plenty of other backpackers around there. So don't be too nervous about 'going alone', I think anyone with an open mind won't have to stay alone for too long over there! .. Hope so, anyways
