Had a change of mind, I'm thinking about doing the Route 66 on my own , I'm from England and I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever done this before ? How easy it to find your way etc? Best to drive yourself or do a tour ?
Route 66 is a mere shadow of its former glory (and a VERY thin shadow it is) but the highway is so famously embedded into the American psyche that it's super easy to research with several websites that detail every single inch/centimetre of the (barely still existing) original route and attractions.
Google is your friend.
Have fun.
Cheers,
Terry
Tom,
is worth driving IMO. However, you need to pick the section that has the most interest to you. Read about each state and decide what part you want to drive. I think a rental car would be a better option than a tour.
covers our drive in the AZ section. From Oatman to williams has not changed much. An easy day trip from Vegas. Good luck with your planning.
I think 66 is pretty cool. If your from GB you'll see lots of sprawling landscape. Not much natural glory, no real mountains (maybe a bit in AZ) but mostly just country. So you're gonna be driving lot's and lot's of miles for the attractions... make sure that's what you want to see.
Imho THE best of the USA is the Mountains and forests, lakes and nature etc.. which would lead me to recommend the PCH for a great strip of highway. It's much more exciting and downright spectacular no matter where you're from. Just want to make sure it's not gonna be too cold in whatever time of year you are gonna be travelling. Lot's of neat little towns and tourist attractions. But the ocean, mountains and forests, wine country are truly a thing of glory. Just an idea.

use gmaps streetwalk to look at sections of it, words are only so good at describing it. google 66 websites.
If you are going to do Route 66, the four part documentary by Billy Connolly is a must see.
