Hi, I am thinking about volunteering for BUNAC this summer in Arizona. They offer pick up from either phoenix airport or flagstaff station... The flights are far to expensive from England to Pheonix so I was thinking about flying into LAX (cheap flights!) and then travelling to Flagstaff station. How far away is the station from LAX...like a short bus ride? or am I being very naïve and its actually a bit of a trek?! thanks!
It's about 780 kilometers, and takes 11 to 13 hours with Greyhound (transferring once) from downtown LA (which you'd still need to get to from LAX first).
Actually, looks like the 11 hour trip goes via Phoenix, which is only 7-8 hours direct from downtown LA.
Either way, not my idea of fun.
British Airways seems to have direct daily flights from London to Phoenix for £470-£490 for most days in July, and I don't really see LAX being much cheaper than that most of the time.
You could catch a pretty cheap flight from LAX to Flagstaff using a US airline. I'm not sure if Southwest flies there but they are cheapest. Search on Orbitz, you might find something cheap.
Yes, southwest does fly from LAX to PHX and you can usually get that flight for $69USD one-way plus no bag fees. Summer time it can raise to $99. I'd suggest you check the Southwest website directly and look for their deals to be released on Tuesdays.

No, one leg, so 950 for the return. Didn't see any returns to LAX for cheaper than 850, though, hence thinking the direct flight might be an option. (But then, I didn't spend a whole lot of time looking.)

I found one stops through Atlanta on Wednesdays on KLM that cost 609 GBP round trip. Or you could go on British Airlines RT for 650 pounds. Took me about 3 minutes to find these on kayak.
Checked Southwest and their one-ways from LAX to Phoenix on these same days were $99 (about 60 British pounds . So for a total of 729 pounds you could get as far as Phoenix round-trip. Then you would just need them to pick you up at the Phoenix airport.
