Hey everybody
In Thailand near Christmas and New Years holidays is the most expensive time of the year to visit. Good weather but also higher hotel prices, and more tourists around.
You mention you have your visas worked out. Looks like you will be paying for visas for each country with maybe an exception for Malaysia. Unless your country has some sort of different agreement than coming from Europe or N. America. (For Thailand, staying over 30 days, you will need a tourist visa if coming from most Western countries.)
With a definite departure date you might save money with a round trip plane ticket. Usually this is cheaper than 2 one way flights when flying long distance from some countries. With round trip plane ticket to Bangkok, flying from Malaysia back to Bangkok for a flight home could be cheaper than flying from Malaysia one way. Depends on what country you are starting from and returning to. (Sometimes there is not much of a difference in price between a single one way flight and a round trip ticket. Some exceptions for nearby countries and for smaller, discount airlines. Always "do the math!")
A definite departure date make it easier to plan an budget out. Many people look at their available funds and then decide how much per day they have for hotel, food, entertainment, etc. Then plan their holiday around that available money. This way when you ask for hotel help you will know how much you can afford. If you find out that with your available money you will always be staying in crappy places, eating crappy food, doing less than what you want - maybe stay for a shorter amount of time and have more daily spending money. Do you have a rough idea of how much money you can afford per day for this trip after you pay for your plane rides?
You can look over a few travel guides for some background information. Sometimes they include how to get between different cities and even maybe some hotel suggestions too. A quick Google search will help you on "how to get from here to there" type questions.
There are some old posts on hotels and what to see and do. A forum search will locate them. When you ask for hotel help include a price range. Use the currency of the country you need the hotel in.
Maybe best not to carry a big sack of money with you if you are sleeping in crappy places. Debit cards work in most countries. (Thailand is good for travelers checks. Other nearby countries so-so.) You should tell your bank where you will be visiting before you leave home. Have a credit card available in case emergencies come up. Who knows when you may need hospital care or a flight home suddenly.
Good luck. You have some time to sort things out.
