It's great you have both the Oz and NZ visa sorted already—what an epic three years you're up for
Don't worry about doing it on your own, you will definitely meet people as you go. Some of Melbourne's most popular hostels are listed and you'll make a lot of friends with people you meet there. Personally I lean towards The Nunnery because it is fairly central with the city's cool northern suburbs on its doorstep.
Incidentally, I'd recommend getting a job first and then travelling up the coast. Waiting until your money gets low can be difficult as it will no doubt take time before you actually land a job. I think my partner didn't get a job until almost two months after he arrived!
