I'm heading to Bali in November 2014 to relax at the end of a round the world trip. We're booked into the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Kuta. Ubud is lovely and tranquil, but sinse it's near the centre of the island you have no beaches and nightlife is limited in Ubud to say the least.
To get the best of both worlds why don't you split your week between Kuta and Ubud. I stayed in the "Alila Ubud" which is perfect for a relaxing getaway.
