My first thought is that trying to do South America, Central America and the US in only 6 weeks is very, very rushed, but that's just me, I'm a slow traveller. In any case I hope you have lots of room in your budget for flights because that's a lot of ground to cover.
Where are you flying into and departing from?

I was planning on flying into Santiago and flying out of Los Angeles, but after looking at the prices for flights and considering I only have 6 weeks, I'm thinking of spending 6 weeks in New Zealand instead
Even with flights included you could spend 6 weeks in Central/South America for the same price - and maybe even cheaper - than 6 weeks in NZ, plus you'd be in a "foreign" destination instead of basically the same place as home.
SE Asia would be cheaper than either by any measure.

I decided that 6 weeks was too long in NZ so I've decided that I'm going to spend 3 weeks in the south island of NZ, 8 days in Hawaii and 11 days in Las Vegas and the surrounding area on a Trek America tour. NYE in Las Vegas of course

Hawaii is SO expensive, because it is an island- they have to pay a lot of ship and fly everything in. Just be aware of that. any flights you're taking from Hawaii into the US are also going to be killer expensive.
