solo trip to Europe Sept 23 - Oct 3 2014

Hi, I'm a female solo traveller going to Europe for 2 weeks. Feeling nervous to go on vacation for a 2 week stretch. I'm going to Spain, Italy, Greece and Germany.

Hi There,

I am planning Berlin,Prague, Munich, Zurich, Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome and then back to Doha/Dubai.
My dates are flexible starting from Sep 25 until Mid October.
Even i am looking for a fellow traveler to just jostle up those historic paths and share more info.
If you are interested in doing Italy together, let me know.
you may connect to me on -snip-

Did i mention that i want Munich for OCTOBER FEST !!
Cheers
Gaurav

My tips for solo travel are to get out early – leave your hostel early in the morning, dress appropriate to your surroundings, walk confidently, maximise your exploring time during the day, be smart about your safety and getting back to your hostel at a reasonable time. Embrace dining out for lunch instead of dinner as it can be cheaper. Most of all, do what you want because it's your trip

Hi Kellie,

Thanks for the tip. What's the longest trip you've been on solo?

Well I guess the year in Japan doesn't really count as I had various support around me, so the 6 month trip I'm about to do will be the longest.

I travel solo by choice and I usually take 4 weeks-long trips at a time. Solo travel is not necessarily for every one but you will never know without trying. What makes you feel nervous about it? Why you think traveling with a stranger will make you more comfortable than traveling by your self ?

Thanks for your response kellie

Hi mariha,

Thanks for your feedback.

I have traveled up to 1 week solo already. I did have an amazing time. I just felt nervous to travel for a 2 week stretch this time. Its nice to have someone to eat with or visits sights or take photos with. Just little things like that. Also travelling in pairs feels kinda safe.

There is always a risk to fall upon a serial killer or something and albeit small, obviously if you unlucky enough, you are in major trouble. It is a personal call and will not discuss this much. In general most people on this world are well-intended people.
Planning to travel with a stranger you are running a more likely risk of meeting someone and then find out you have different traveling style/interests, you don't get very good together and/or he/she has some small habits or characteristics that you personaly can not stand. In order to minimise this risk it is wise to familiarise your self with this person before going on the actual trip. You do not mention when you plan this trip for, but yes, this site is a good one to seek co-travelers. I hope there is enough time to meet people in person or exchange lots of ideas and communication to minimize unpleasant surprises.

That been said, I realise everyone travels differently but I suggest you to give some though if you really want to be tied with someone on the entire trip. Personaly I always enjoy traveling solo and you said you have gone for a week and enjoyed it too. Why not to go solo, let things happening? Often you meet someone by luck and you somehow click together and decide to share a meal or join an activity or even travel together for a few days. It is easy to meet many people around on say a walking tour or a hostel or in a train or whatever and somehow form an idea of his/her personality...

I see you mention 4 whole countries on a small 2 week timeframe. I guess no more than 4 specific spots? I am sure whichever those spots are, there will be many chances for meeting fellow visitors. Depending on specific location there might be some more ideas to meet people, say free walking tours, some organisations/websites that offer a meal with a local, guided tours of parks and museums , pub crawls... There might be some travellerspoint official or unofficial meet-ups too .

On the safety issue, I think traveling solo and using common sense is more safe than traveling with a person you do not know well. Maybe s/he has a tendency to drink too much or flirting with strangers or steeling money/things from you and others, or been naive enough to invite you into dangerous areas/activities or been a drug user and even trying to slip drags into YOUR bag while trying to get a flight. Maybe I am far too consious, but better safe than sorry. Then there are always little things, like when you are solo you are usually more aware of your surroundings, while been enchanted on conversation and/or distracted say posing for photos etc you might actually let your guard down and been more exposed, for example on pick-pocketing.

Last but not least, traveling on your own, your likes/mood rule. Traveling with someone else, you will always have to compromise. Are you sure you want to do this on a limited timeframe on each location?

Just some food for though, final decision is of course yours.

Hi mariha,

Thanks for your response.

I agree that i don't miss having to comprimise with friends on the activities we do.

Two weeks would be just enough for me to see all the sights that i have planned out.
