I am toying with the idea of taking my family on a trip at Christmas. We live in South Florida and my kids have never seen snow. I think it would be great to give them a few days to play in the snow.
This trip would have some peculiar requirements including a limited budget. Here is a list of other things.
I would like somewhere within the US.
A really pretty place would be nice, but snow skiing and stuff like that is not necessary.
I have extremely little experience driving in the snow, so somewhere where you can catch a cab, bus, subway etc straight from the airport would be great.
My elderly mother would be along, so no required climbing etc.
I would really like to rent a cabin, small house or house trailer or such since there would be six of us and it just sounds pleasant.
Hi,
I am surprised you have no responses yet, so I will start the (snow) ball rolling with some not too specific suggestions.
A google search for 'which US cities get the most snow at Chrismas' gave me
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Christmas_(weather) (< ERROR: the link title is too long!)
TP does not like the link so just copy & paste it.
And
Vermont looks like it might match your criteria. You could try Google for Cabins there perhaps.
And of course, every American knows, as soon as you cross the border, Canada has snow year round - Right!
Seriously though - Ottawa most nearly always has snow at Xmas & it is pretty for sure. But does not meet your USA criteria.

Thanks Hasbeen
That's a good start.
I don't think you'll find snow anywhere during that time or just a less could be found in Washington DC but Vermont looks like the best option for you.
You'll get tons of snow in Alaska, and you can ski there at Aleyska, which is easily reachable from Anchorage by either train or car. Probably too expensive as it would be a long flight there, however.
Your best other bet would be at Stowe in Vermont. One of the most popular places close to Stowe (and great for a Christmas trip with the family) is the Von Trapp family cabin. The Von Trapps are famous since they are the actual family upon which the movie "The Sound of Music" is based.
Here's the website for their location:

Enjoy.
Forgot to mention. Stowe is about 30 miles from the closest airport (Burlington, Vermont), and the cost of a shuttle is $65 one-way.
Thanks Calcruzer
Stowe sounds like a good possibility

Post is a little old, but New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine should all have snow by then. Massachusetts is truly hit or miss. Honestly, they all are to a point, but the prior listed 3 states have ski resorts, and generally the towns nearby have oodles of snow. Stowe, Vermont is absolutely gorgeous, plus you're close to the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory if you can finagle a way to get there. As far as public transportation goes, it's going to be mostly by cab in any of these areas. New Hampshire can be reached by bus from Boston, so that could be an option! I've lived in New England for much of my life, so if you have any other questions, feel free to ask! I'll be headed to Florida for some warmth in January! Can't wait.
spread out a little...
