One idea is to travel on the later end of September/November period as the weather will be much nicer. It's September in Melbourne now and the weather isn't the greatest. We've had a couple of nice sunny weekends but last week also saw hail storms and flooding. Where are you looking to base yourself? I hear St Kilda is backpacker central and it's not too far from the CBD. Just looking to see the city or get out and about as well? Great Ocean Road e.g is a great drive and there's fairly cheap flights to Sydney/Hobart/Gold Coast.
Thanks for you reply. The weather doesn't sound to great so will probably leave it to late September/ or early November. St kilda's I will look into. Thinking also about visiting Sydney & Perth when I am there.

Nice! Perth is a bit dearer to get too but very nice to visit, Actually I live in Melbourne
Lucky you living in Melbourne. Need to start reading up on the city loads of planning to do & only staying a short while as well. Not sure I will have time to explore lots of it.

I cant wait to go working around the clock to save for it mind at the min. Melbourne is a most but my friend has just gone off & she mentioned cairns as well.

I am also looking to be in Australia Oct/Nov next year as well as Fiji and NZ looking to spend from Oct - Jan in this part of the world for my birthday, Christmas and New Year.

I am going as a solo traveller, looking to set off next June time to India, SE Asia and Japan and then down to Oz etc.

Yeah that sounds like a plan looking to be in oz for the beginning of Nov next year stay for a month if not longer.
Looking at Melbourne & cairns if you want to look at sorting something out before you go. Looking at sorting dates out end of Oct this & putting my deposit down. Booking it through STA travel.
You will have a fab time going to all those places beforehand.
