Hi Everybody!
Rumour has it that Argentina is a bit on the pricey side too. You will certainly find your pound goes a long way in Bolivia and Peru and Ecuador are reasonably cheap too. Enjoy South America!
6 months = 180 days so $8,000 USD = a little over $40/day for your budget.
For transport throughout South America + accommodation + meals + attractions + some beers and fun... in my opinion $40/day is not enough. It's doable of course, but it would be my version of hell. Always sleeping in dorm rooms in the crappiest hostels... never splurging for a great restaurant or the occasional nightclub blow out... watching every penny all the time... no thanks, that's my definition of a $hit holiday.
I'd suggest saving more money or cutting back on the length of the trip - but if you're super low budget and frugal then it's possible I suppose.
Have fun and good luck with your research.
Cheers,
Terry
PS Colombia is my favourite country in South America, you'll have a gas there. Argentina's economy is circling the toilet bowl, right now you can get over 15 pesos for $1 USD on the blue market there as opposed to barely over 5 pesos at the government rip-off rate from an ATM or bank, so bring USD for that portion of your trip.
