First of all, I would definitely do it all by yourself and rent a vehicle. There is no reason for anyone to not travel independently in the USA, apart from a few disability reasons or so. Easy, good infrastructure and generally safe.
Now regarding the time, I would take about 3-4 weeks to to this route all the way to Los Angeles (I guess?). There are many side roads and parks, towns, cities and attractions. It's difficult to start naming all interesting stuff along the way.
