There will be at least a million tourists show up in August. Expect some rain from time to time.
You meet people in bars, pubs, on tours and at your hotel. Sometimes just walking alone. My preference for a hotel in the Bangkok area is in the Sukhumvit Road, Nana area, where you can walk to nightlife, cheap restaurants, good food and use the Skytrain rail service. (If you arrive at Suvarnabhumi (BKK) you can use cheap rail service until midnight to get to the city area.)
Arrive late probably have a hotel to head for and not hunt up a place to stay in the dark carrying everything you own. If you ask for hotel help include a price range. Use Thai baht. (Do not change any money back home to Thai baht. You get a better rate of exchange in Thailand. There are even bank run money changers at the airport where you can change a little money for paying first night expenses and transportation, etc.
There will be some bars and pubs showing soccer games on TV. Do a Google search for British bars Bangkok if you want.
Have a nice time.
