A WEEK IN TOKYO ON A BUDGET!

Thinking of doing a quick swag stop in tokyo japan before travelling to australia. Will be in Thailand / south east asia so want to be flying out from there but essentially just want to get to japan in the cheapest way possible so id love some help. here are my questions:

If you are doing Tokyo on a budget, then the biggest issue you will face is the cost of accommodation. Tokyo is expensive, but there are some good options around if you can get them in advance. Otherwise, if spending a bit of time on trains isn't a problem, stay a little way out of the main city centre. Chiba or Yokohama can be cheaper options, and much more affordable.

Food is cheap - ramen or yakitori (meat on a stick) are good cheap options, and try to find curry rice, burger and pasta. Even the food from convenience stores can be good value - better yet, have some fun in a supermarket. Breakfast is famous for "morning set" and MacDonalds has a nice Japanese twist (but find a MOS Burger - much tastier, or a Lotteria).

Must see/do? Depends on what you are interested in. You can easily spend 1/2 to a full day in some areas (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukero, Akahabara). If you head to Harajuku you also get Yoyogi Park and the Meiji Shrine.

Only issues you would probably encounter flying to Australia are bio-security ones (it's a bit similar to New Zealand). Don't take fresh foods, feathers, wood - stuff like that.
