Hi everyone, I'm very new to this sort of thing but if anyone has any advice on travelling through china it would be much appreciated. I don't really have a time scale but I'm thinking maybe a month or 2 and want to see the most i possibly can. starting in Hong Kong and then not sure where to go next. If anyone has any information regarding this topic let me know.

When you apply for a Chinese visa, you are expected to give some kind of itinerary for your stay, but you do not have to stick to it.
Some cities have Chinese Travel Service offices which are very helpful.
Summer is quite hot and can be wet. Winter can be cold in Beijing, etc.
Distances are great in China and trains are slow. Even though you have plenty of time, planes are a better option. I just walked into an airport and booked.
Don't dismiss train travel in China. The country now has some superfast modern trains connecting its major cities. They may be a better option than flying, which can be subject to delays and cancellations now that Chinese airspace is more congested. Buses also are an option. Cyberia probably is referring to China International Travel Service, or CITS, which also has an office in the U.S. I was in Beijing a few days ago to take the Trans-Mongolian to Moscow, where I now am. Travel in China is easy. From Hong Kong, make your way to Guilin, Yangshuo and the Li River valley. Try a raft trip on the Yulong River, too. Perhaps go to Yunnan. Perhaps Xian to see the terra-cotta soldiers. Shanghai is great, as in Hangzhou and Suzhou; and Yellow Mountain or Huangshan. There's Shanghai, Beijing, etc. Look at a map. Check out the many tour-company itineraries for ideas. You'll have a great time in China.
P.S. I traveled on the Trans-Mongolian with a UK man who was returning to London from Bangkok by train and bus -- no flights. He's done it four times. So, if you you have some time, that's an option. There's a Web site, seat61.com, that has a suggested itinerary. Getting a berth on the Trans-Mongolian shouldn't be a problem, as many people now seem to prefer to fly. Tickets can be purchased through CITS, or any travel agency in China. A comfortable "hard sleeper" berth can be had for less than $700.

We were in China for two weeks last year and traveled around mainly by train. We flew into Beijing and spent a few days there then took an overnight train to X'ian for the Terracotta Warriors and Hua Shan. The overnight train was a good night's sleep and saved on accommodation expenses. From X'ian we took another overnight train to Chengdu for the pandas and then a short train to Chongqing to get a boat down the Yangtze (although, after today's news you could be forgiven for skipping that) to Yichang and than a train from there to Shanghai. That was easily doable in the two weeks and quite a pleasant way of getting around. With a full two months, you'll be able to see a great deal more - enjoy your planning!
