May I ask how much money you took, and how long that lasted you? I tend to advice people here to count on a minimum budget of AUD $80/day when living frugally, and that it can easily double if you're not careful watching your money, but it's been quite a while again since I last was in Australia, so it'd be good to get some idea of what people are actually spending nowadays...
Good luck with the fruit picking, and finding a buddy for it! (Just in case: Are you aware of the Harvest Guide? If not, , and should give you a good idea of where to go to find work come July.)
