What's the use of reporting if profiles are not deleted?

Hi,

Since most spam accounts are fire-and-forget (that is, the spammer is unlikely to ever use the account again), I can imagine it not being the best use of Peter's limited time to ban such accounts.

(Of course, if the account has promotional links in the profile, or a spammy travel helper profile, or, or, or... then banning it / cleaning it up should happen. Peter: Assuming time is indeed the biggest bottleneck, is there any way we could help with this? Maybe some functionality that'd require two Moderators to independently recommend banning, only effective for new members, which'd then trigger the banning code?)

I would say about 2/3 to 75% of the spammers have links, photos, blogs or so in their profile, the others just add something in the guide or forum.

But some are so easy it might be a solution that a few moderators indeed have the opportunity to ban them and delete profiles. I would be more than happy to flag them and a second person (maybe you Sander?) would see if deleting their profile/inactivating their account is indeed the best solution.

btw, check the Middle East article and on the right side the travel help settings to get an idea of the idiots that are around

Hey, I'm deleting the profiles when I think they're bannable offences.

I don't check it every single day, but when I get a chance I do go through them and ban them. There's currently 11 flagged members to work through. I don't consider that a huge backlog. And when they are flagged they are blocked from doing more stuff until I clear it.

A system that allowed moderators to ban when multiple moderators were in agreement might be suitable.

The Middle East one you reported a few days ago was cleared on the same day. Or is there some other one there you felt needed banning?

Nope, saw that one later thank you very much.

Btw, thought you didn't read my mail about that; in some cases communication might be better from both sides

Cheers

Yeah, sorry about that. Most likely a case of "ok, deal with this straight away".. then "ooh, what's that thing over there".. and then I forgot to answer to say I did it.

I tend to forget you're pretty busy with a gazillion things here on TP..
Still have to check the mapping stuff...but no new trips nowadays with the little one so far..other priorities

Hi,

Just wondering how we are standing on the possibility of having a few other moderators (Sander/me?, just an idea) to delete profiles if necessary.

Some spammers in the guide...flagged them and they are still active profiles. I know based on the above that's not an issue and they are unlikely to spam again, but I don't think inactivating an account is that difficult or much work right?

Just checking as I know: 1. they were deleted in the past pretty quickly (and almost Always) and 2. it's a little demotivating for me personally to flag anyone basically.

cheers and thanks for understanding
mike

I look at the Forums page & Bold as Brass, there is the word SPAM - Five times, sometimes more, sometimes less. It looks like an episode of Monty Python. Would it be possible to hide the thread temporarily rather than advertising SPAM?

Steve

That, I think, would be a great improvement! Probably not all threads marked as spam everywhere, but something like this:
1) If a thread is marked as spam, and was created by a user who hasn't created any non-spam threads older than 2 days, don't show it in the forum (except to the user itself, and to all moderators - regardless of forum).
2) If a thread is marked as spam, never show it on the homepage.

FWIW, currently the forum index is showing completely spam-free. o/
