Hi. In August we'll be travelling with our 2 daughters (9&10). We are sending 5 days in Seattle for my husband's conference and then we have 14 days to travel to San Diego.
There is much to see in San Diego. 14 days should be enough time. Definitely see the San Diego Zoo (it is considered the largest zoo in the world), the Wild Animal Park, and SeaWorld. One day at the zoo is probably not enough if you want to see most of it. The Monterey Aquarium in not in San Diego. It is in Monterey which is a long way from San Diego. If you are in Monterey, it is worth seeing. Check out Old Town in San Diego. This has an old Spanish theme with Mexican restaurants and shops. Balboa Park has a lot of museums on interest which is not far from the San Diego Zoo. If you like beaches, there are a lot of beach activities along the Pacific Ocean. The Gaslamp District in downtown San Diego is full of shops and great restaurants.

Definitely take the coastal route, you’ll be so impressed by the scenery and the little towns you can stop by when you pull off the road occasionally. I would spend more than a couple of days in San Diego. Don't forget to leave some time just to chill out and explore the beaches and the countryside in San Diego. The beaches and the coastline are truly stunning. Mission Bay, where SeaWorld is located, is the perfect place to walk, or take part in sports like kite surfing. La Jolla is beautiful.

I've done this trip a few times and try and stop off at different places each time I go. My last trip along the West Coast was around August last year and had beautiful weather the whole way.
If stopping off in Oregon somewhere, I highly recommend Eugene. It's a smaller city but they seriously have one of the best weekend markets I have ever been to. The folks in Eugene are some of the nicest people I've met whilst travelling and it's like stepping into a timewarp at times (lots of hippies around) The drive in is also absolutely amazing, the scenery is photoworthy at every turn. Portland is also a cool city as well.
San Francisco is an absolute must stop and in my opinion is one of the best cities in the whole of the country. Each time I go, I find something new that I had missed the last time. The best way to explore San Francisco is by foot - those hills give you an amazing free workout and you get to see so much more.
Day trips to Yosemite can also be done from either San Francisco or Sacramento with views that are absolutely mind blowing!
Sacramento is also a pretty cool town - the younger ones might have a bit of fun around the Old Sacramento area which has been preserved to look like you're stepping out of a Wild West movie. You can even ride a horse down the street. The Capitol Building area and Sutter's Fort are interesting areas as well (and educational!). Sacramento is also pretty small so all this can be done in one day, and all within walking distance from one another.
If staying in LA, I'd recommend staying beachside. It's prettier, more relaxed and just has a much better vibe than downtown. If you've got kids with you though, you may just want to stay around Anaheim - the commute from LA to Disney Land can be a hassle.
